Environmental Protection Agency Approves Nootkatone

The Environmental Protection Agency has approved a new ingredient, called nootkatone, that repels and kills mosquitoes and ticks. The naturally occurring ingredient — which is responsible for the characteristic scent of grapefruit — was discovered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and developed into an insecticide.

Berkeley Study Links West Nile with Higher Temperatures

According to a recent UC Berkeley study, there is a link between increased West Nile transmission with higher temperatures. As temperatures continue to increase globally, regions closer to the coast are likely to face an increased risk of West Nile virus outbreaks, according to study lead author Nicholas Skaff.
